Intsia House, a two-story residence in Makati, Metro Manila, reinterprets elements of Philippine architecture to create a contemporary home rooted in tradition. Designed for the tropical climate, the house integrates cultural understanding, environmental responsiveness, and material innovation.

The design features a heavy base and an airy upper level, echoing traditional Filipino architecture. Elevated among treetops, the upper level serves as the primary living space, maximizes airflow, captures breezes, and is removed from potential floods. A split roof enhances comfort by allowing hot air to escape, while the open layout fosters social interaction and a sense of community, aligning with the Filipino family dynamic.

The base, defined by a central void, divides the structure into two parts while subtly guiding toward a discreet main entrance. Visitors are welcomed by a naturally ventilated lanai – a transitional space connecting private and public areas. Cooled by cross breezes and framing the tropical garden, the lanai creates a hospitable arrival experience. The lahar-infused concrete bricks enhance thermal comfort, providing relief from the tropical heat.

The material palette balances durability with artistry. Locally cast bricks establish a connection to regional craftsmanship, while handwoven copper screens, crafted by local artisans, combine function with beauty. Over time, these screens develop a natural patina, reinforcing the house’s connection to its environment and creating a dialogue between permanence and aging.

As Studio Barcho’s first completed project, Intsia House exemplifies a contemporary approach to traditional design. By integrating cultural respect, environmental strategies, and collaboration with local artisans, the house aspires to serve as an example of thoughtful design in the Philippines, striving to be a meaningful home and a model for sustainable tropical living.
